Hodeidah – SABA:

The Al-Zuhrah Agricultural Cooperative Association in Hodeidah launched a canal dredging project on Saturday to rehabilitate the northern Al-Dura’aniyah Canal in Al-Zuhrah District, spanning 5 kilometers.

The initiative, coordinated with the Tihama Development Authority and local authorities, aims to revamp the canal for agricultural development, benefiting more than 4,000 farmland plots, as part of broader efforts to improve irrigation systems and reinforce rural agricultural infrastructure.

Ali Haza’a, head of the Tihama Development Authority, described the canal dredging as a practical step to support farmers and expand cultivated areas. He added that the authority is implementing similar projects to boost agricultural output across the Tihama region.

Abdulrahman Al-Rifa’i, Director of Al-Zuhrah District, emphasized the canal’s vital role in irrigating farmlands in Al-Dura’aniyah. Cleaning and rehabilitating it will help improve water flow, reduce losses, and ensure access to remote agricultural plots. The project is particularly timely ahead of the planting season, ensuring agricultural stability and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

Qadhi Ali Qadhi, Chairman of the Al-Zuhrah Agricultural Cooperative, said the association is focused on directly serving farmers through infrastructure development. He explained that dredging the canal is part of a series of interventions to rehabilitate irrigation systems and support sustainable local agriculture.

He noted that the project will reduce production costs, increase water distribution efficiency, and ultimately raise productivity—contributing to the community’s goals of achieving food security and rural resilience.
