Islamic Forum commemorates Imam Zaid martyrdom
[19/ July/2025]
Sana'a - Saba:
The Islamic Forum in Sana'a commemorated on Saturday the martyrdom of Imam Zaid (peace be upon him) in a speech event under the slogan "Insight and Jihad."

The event was attended by the Advisor to the President of the Supreme Political Council, Ambassador Abdul-Ilah Hajer. The Mufti of Yemen, Allamah Shamsuddin Sharafuddin, stated that commemorating this occasion is a moment to seek guidance, light, steadfastness, and certainty in the righteous path and straight way brought by the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household).

He pointed out that the Umayyads had a negative impact on the past and present of the Ummah by instilling concepts in people's minds that deviated from the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the authentic Muhammadan Islam.

He said, "We are keen to save ourselves from Allah’s punishment, wrath, and displeasure so that we may be among the people of Paradise. There are principles and beliefs that obligate people to hold firm to them and manifest their truths. How do we embody true faith and prove our belief? For there are those who say 'There is no god but Allah' yet drink alcohol and commit adultery. The word 'La ilaha illa Allah' must have a present meaning, and our actions must clearly demonstrate that the meaning of faith is 'There is no god but Allah – Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.'"

He added, "During the Umayyad era, the features of religion were altered, deviation increased in the Ummah, and matters worsened to extreme limits, with corruption spreading, Jews and Christians being brought close, and the believers being intimidated—just as they intimidate us today with America and Israel. Thus, Imam Zaid (peace be upon him) had no choice but to declare his famous statement: 'By Allah, the Book of Allah does not permit me to remain silent.'"

Allamah Sharafuddin continued, "Those who carry the thought of Imam Zaid—which is, in truth, the thought of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), indeed the thought of the Quran and the Sharia of Allah Almighty—come out and openly declare their enmity toward the Jews and Christians, following not only Imam Zaid or the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household), but all the prophets and messengers. For Imam Zaid and the prophets are the best examples. Whoever rises against the tyrants, disavows them, allies with the believers, and disassociates from the oppressors is truly following the path of the prophets."

He noted that the Yemenis today are the ones carrying Imam Zaid’s thought, having sold themselves in the cause of Allah and standing firm against America and all the tyrants of the world. He explained that some scholars today discourage people from jihad and focus instead on worldly matters.

He said, "We find many people distant from the reality of their Ummah and what is happening in Gaza in terms of massacres, far from mobilization in the cause of Allah. This is because some scholars are careful not to offend the feelings of Jews and Christians with their words. Instead, they seek to tempt and mislead Muslims, bringing calamities upon them while holding accountable those who enjoin good and forbid evil."

The Mufti of Yemen clarified, "Some have erred by claiming that Imam Ali (peace be upon him) rose for power, as Ibn Taymiyyah did, and others have said that the uprisings of Imams Hussein and Zaid (peace be upon them) were for worldly gain. When Sayyid Hussein, Sayyid Badruddin, and Sayyid Abdul-Malik (peace be upon them) rose, they were accused of seeking power. Thus, it has become the norm that whoever rises to enjoin good and forbid evil is accused of seeking power and worldly gain, when in reality their uprising was to restore the boundaries of Allah’s religion and reform the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his household)."

He affirmed, "The path of worldly power is clear—those who seek this world do not fight the enemies of Allah but rather establish relations with them, as Al-Jawlani does today. We will never sell our religion for worldly gain, nor will we compromise, for this is our culture and creed."

For his part, the Head of the Awqaf Authority, Allamah Abdul-Majeed Al-Houthi, described the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Zaid bin Ali (peace be upon them) as painful, as it marks a dark phase in Islamic history when the spirit of Islam was stripped away, leaving nothing of the Quran but its script.

He stated that the uprising of Imam Zaid, like that of Imam Hussein before him (peace be upon them), embodied the voice of Muhammadan Islam, which came to establish truth and justice—not to legitimize oppression—and to free people from the servitude of men to the worship of the Lord of men.

Allamah Al-Houthi noted that "the oppressors used Islam as a tool to legitimize their tyranny, injustice, and crimes when people remained silent about speaking the truth. Thus, the voice of the Ahlul Bayt became the fearless call for truth, unafraid of blame in the path of Allah."

He explained that Imam Zaid (peace be upon him) spent 13 years contemplating the Quran to find a way out for the Ummah from the weakness, surrender, and humiliation they suffered under Umayyad rule, paving the way for freedom fighters in every time and place.

The Head of the Awqaf Authority emphasized that "the path of Imam Zaid (peace be upon him) has remained towering for 1,300 years, with revolutionaries following his example writing the most epic tales of heroism in every generation. Were it not for the sacrifices and blood of the Ahlul Bayt Imams, Islam would have been lost, and Umayyad thought—which prioritized obedience to the ruler even if he flogged backs and seized wealth—would have prevailed."

He said, "The Umayyad ideology manifests today in stripping the Ummah of its dignity, honor, and freedom, and in legitimizing oppression. It is also seen in those who remain silent about the massacres in Gaza and in the policies of Ibn Salman, Ibn Zayed, Al-Sisi, and other rulers who have left the Ummah prey to Jews and Christians, obscuring the principles of Islam and subjecting Muslims to the whims of the Jews."

Allamah Al-Houthi urged following the footsteps of Imam Zaid and moving on his path to support the Palestinian people under the leadership of Sayyid Abdul-Malik Badruddin Al-Houthi.

For his part, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Islamic Forum, Allamah Abdullah Al-Shadhili, described the martyrdom of Imam Zaid (peace be upon him) as a tragedy in Islamic history, stressing the need to draw lessons from his courage, sacrifice, trust in Allah, and his stand against tyrants and the arrogant.

He reviewed the life and struggle of Imam Zaid, the insight with which he moved, and the path he charted for the Ummah—one inseparable from jihad, supporting truth and the oppressed, and confronting tyrants and the enemies of Islam.

Al-Shadhili touched on the virtues, sacrifices, and immortal sayings of Imam Zaid, highlighting the importance of commemorating his martyrdom to follow the path of the Quran’s ally, his morals, his revolution against tyranny and arrogance.
