Japan posts $1.02 billion trade surplus in June

Japan recorded a trade surplus of 153.1 billion yen ($1.02 billion) in June, according to a statement issued Thursday by the Japanese Ministry of Finance.

Analysts had projected a surplus of 353.9 billion yen for July, compared to a revised trade deficit of 638.6 billion yen in May, and 637.6 billion yen according to preliminary data.

Japan’s exports fell by 0.5% in June, contrary to analysts’ expectations of a 0.5% increase, following a 1.7% decline in the previous month.

On the other hand, imports rose by 0.2% in June, defying expectations of a 1.6% drop, after falling by 7.7% in the prior month.
