Chinese president: Moscow, Beijing need to boost bilateral support at multilateral forums

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Tuesday that Russia and China should strengthen mutual support and cooperation in multilateral forums, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the Chinese President said, "The foreign ministries of the two countries should continue to effectively implement the important agreements reached with President Vladimir Putin and strengthen mutual support and cooperation in multilateral forums, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization."

Jinping highlighted the importance and necessity of protecting the security and development interests of the two countries, welcoming Lavrov's visit to China to participate in the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov delivered a verbal message from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Lavrov conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin's cordial greetings and best wishes to the Chinese leader. The two sides discussed a number of bilateral political communication issues at the highest levels, including preparations for the Russian President's visit to China to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Victory over Japan military victory.

The ministry said in a statement: "The Russian side also discussed some current issues on the international and regional agenda."

The Russian Foreign Ministry added: "The President of the People's Republic of China welcomed the upcoming visit of the Russian President to China, with whom he enjoys a solid and close friendship."

Xi Jinping praised the level of bilateral relations, stressing the focus on strengthening the comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction with Russia.
