Four Migrants Dead, 20 Missing Off Dominican Coast
[12/ July/2025]

Santo Domingo - Saba:

Four migrants died and around 20 others went missing after a boat capsized in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic’s Civil Defense Agency stated in a release late yesterday that its teams managed to rescue 17 migrants from the boat, which was carrying around 40 people en route to U.S. territory Puerto Rico. The Navy announced it had rescued ten people from the Dominican Republic and seven from Haiti, including a child.

It is worth noting that migrant boats, known as "yola," are made in the Dominican Republic from wood or fiberglass without regard for public safety standards. These sea crossings have become an increasing phenomenon over the past decade.
