The BRICS Summit, chaired by Brazil in 2025, began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday and will continue until Monday.
This is the 17th summit at the leaders' level of the BRICS group, which currently includes 10 countries after its recent expansion, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Iran. Indonesia officially joined in early 2025.
The plenary session of the summit will discuss issues of peace and security, as well as global governance reforms and prospects for strengthening political, trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation.
In his opening speech, the Russian President emphasized that the BRICS countries continue to deepen cooperation in key areas, noting that all BRICS countries stand for equality, good neighborliness, and the principles of traditional values, according to Sputnik News.
He said, "The influence and power of the BRICS group in the world are growing year after year," noting that "the world is undergoing radical changes, and the unipolar system of international relations is a thing of the past."
Putin expressed his hope for expanding the use of national currencies among the BRICS countries.
