Berlin - Saba:
A massive fire broke out on Thursday at a former military training site in the eastern German state of Saxony and has been classified as a “major danger situation.”
More than 200 firefighters battled the flames, which spread into the neighboring state of Brandenburg, which surrounds the German capital, Berlin.
A statement issued by German authorities said: “In cooperation with the Saxony state police, the possibility of using helicopters to fight the fire is currently being considered, taking into account the presence of unexploded ordnance in the affected area.”
The statement added that the fire area had increased more than tenfold since midday, with at least 600 hectares now affected by the blaze.
Authorities are closely monitoring a nearby biogas plant, as efforts are underway to protect it from the approaching flames.
