Mexico City - (Saba):

At least 11 people were killed and several others injured in a shooting in the central Mexican city of Irapuato.

Reuters reported that Mexican authorities announced that at least 11 people, including a teenager, were killed and several others were injured in a shooting in the central city of Irapuato.

The Attorney General's Office in Guanajuato, the violence-plagued state where Irapuato is located, said that 20 others were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday that children were among the victims, although the Attorney General's Office later confirmed that only one victim was a 17-year-old minor.

Local media reported that the shooting occurred during an evening party celebrating the feast of St. John the Baptist, a Catholic holiday.

A video circulating on social media showed people dancing in the courtyard of an apartment complex while a band played in the background, before the shooting erupted.

Guanajuato, located northwest of Mexico City, is considered one of the most violent states in the country, with organized crime groups vying for control.
