Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the UN Security Council, which is holding a meeting today, must uphold and implement Resolution 487, which it unanimously adopted in 1981 in response to the Zionist entity’s targeting of nuclear facilities in Iraq.
Araghchi wrote on his X (Twitter) account: The Arak heavy water facility, which is under the safeguards agreement of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is currently being implemented according to the agreed technical standards under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA/nuclear deal) – ensuring no radiological risk – was bombed by the Zionist entity in broad daylight yesterday.
He added: UN Security Council Resolution 487 explicitly states that any military attack on nuclear facilities constitutes an assault on the entire safeguards agreement framework of the IAEA and, consequently, a violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Araghchi continued: This resolution not only covers past actions but also applies to future conduct, serving as a clear legal standard against the use or threat of force against safeguarded nuclear facilities.
The Iranian Foreign Minister concluded his post by stressing: If the Security Council is incapable of taking such action, it must explain to the international community why its legal principles are selectively applied on such a critical issue. Should the global nuclear non-proliferation framework collapse, this Council and the Zionist entity will bear full responsibility for all resulting consequences.
