[15/ June/2025]

Englewood - Saba:

The Mexican national team began its Gold Cup title defense with a 3-2 victory over the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in front of 54,309 spectators in Group A.

Mexico, seeking its tenth title in the CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean) tournament, was on track for an easy victory when Edson Alvarez and Raúl Jiménez scored in the first half and the second half.

Alvarez capitalized on a corner kick before the end of the first half, heading home a powerful header. Veteran Jimenez doubled his team's lead 30 seconds into the second half, following a clever pass from Santiago Jimenez. However, the Dominican Republic responded with a superb solo goal from Peter Gonzalez, who scored his country's first goal in this tournament (51), reducing the deficit.

The Dominican Republic didn't enjoy the goal for long, as César Montes restored the lead just three minutes later.

Edinson Azcona reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 67th minute.

The group also includes Suriname and Costa Rica.
