The major stock indices on Wall Street closed sharply lower at the end of the trading session.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 68.92 points, or 1.14 percent, to close at 5,976.34, while the Nasdaq Composite index fell 254.13 points, or 1.29 percent, to 19,407.49.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 768.73 points, or 1.79 percent, to close at 42,198.89.
