Municipalities in the Central Gaza Strip have warned of a complete halt to their essential services in the coming hours due to the lack of fuel needed to operate water wells, sewage pumps, waste collection and transportation vehicles, and heavy equipment needed to remove rubble and clear roads.
In a statement, a copy of it received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) on Monday, the municipalities said: "Despite limited resources and the diesel shortage, the municipalities have attempted to continue providing the minimum level of humanitarian services. However, they are now in a state of complete paralysis and a complete cessation of operations due to the intransigence of the occupation and its continued refusal to allow fuel into the municipalities."
The municipalities added: "This is despite all the appeals and distress calls issued by the municipalities and partner institutions." In addition, the Mekorot water pipeline—one of the main sources supplying the Central Governorate—has been halted since January 23, 2025, and has yet to resume. This has exacerbated the water crisis, threatening serious health and environmental disasters and the spread of epidemics and diseases, especially with the onset of summer and the increasing need for water. This comes at a time when municipal crews are unable to intervene to alleviate the suffering or facilitate life.
They called on "all UN organizations, international institutions, and relevant parties to urgently intervene to supply the fuel needed to operate water wells, sewage pumps, waste collection vehicles, and heavy equipment to remove rubble and open main roads. This will enable municipalities to resume their service and humanitarian role for the residents of the Central Governorate and its displaced, whose suffering is exacerbated by the harsh summer heat and water scarcity."
They municipalities called on "the relevant authorities to urgently coordinate the reactivation of the Mekorot water pipeline and return it to its previous operation, given its strategic importance in supporting the water network in the Central Governorate, especially in light of the ongoing war and destruction."
They hold the Israeli occupation fully responsible for any humanitarian disaster that may occur at any moment, with the threat of total collapse looming. We affirm that what is happening is a war crime and a flagrant violation of all international and humanitarian laws and conventions.
