China condemned on Saturday French President Emmanuel Macron's remarks comparing the situation in Ukraine to the crisis surrounding Taiwan, warning that any comparison between the two issues is "completely unacceptable."
In a statement issued by the Chinese embassy in Singapore, where Macron made his remarks, Beijing stressed that "comparing the Taiwan issue to the Ukrainian conflict is unacceptable. The two issues are fundamentally different and cannot be compared in any way."
The Chinese embassy stressed that "the Taiwan issue is purely an internal Chinese affair."
The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in turn, reiterated in a Facebook post that "there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory."
During his speech at the opening of the Shangri-La Dialogue on Defense and Security Policy on Friday evening, the French president stated that a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan could be compared to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, asking, "If we accept that Russia will seize part of Ukrainian territory without a decisive international response, how will we deal with what China might do in Taiwan?"
