UN, Red Cross delegation review conditions at Hodeida Correctional Facility

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Cooperation ambassador Ismail al-Mutawakel and head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen Christine Shibola on Monday visited the Central Correctional Facility in Hodeida governorate to assess its conditions and needs.

They were briefed by the facility's administration on urgent requirements, including water and sewage network maintenance, consistent electricity supply, and the restoration of inmate wards and the women's building.

Ambassador al-Mutawakel stated the visit aimed to strengthen humanitarian cooperation with the ICRC to improve services in correctional facilities, emphasizing the urgent need for water, electricity, and better health infrastructure.

Christine Shibola of the ICRC expressed gratitude for the government's cooperation and affirmed the committee's commitment to addressing the facility's needs, particularly in water and energy, and to sending an engineering team for assessment and sustainable solutions.

Representatives from the Yemeni Red Crescent Society and the ICRC highlighted the importance of joint efforts to improve conditions, especially in health and environmental aspects, and affirmed their readiness to cooperate.

Officials from the Ministry of Interior and the Rehabilitation and Reform Authority also stressed the need for continued coordination to implement urgent improvements in correctional facilities, considering it a humanitarian imperative.
