New York - Saba:
The Director of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Angelica Jacom, warned that the people of Gaza are suffering from "severe food insecurity and the risk of imminent famine."
Jaccom said, "The people of Gaza are not only suffering from a lack of food, but from a complete collapse of the basic conditions for survival, including health, livelihoods, and social infrastructure, leaving entire communities in despair, devastation, and death."
During her briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Jacom explained that the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report confirmed that the entire population of Gaza is at risk of famine.
She confirmed that the agricultural food systems in Gaza have completely collapsed, noting that approximately 75% of agricultural land has been destroyed, in addition to the devastation of livestock production.
She noted that flour prices have increased by 3,000% since last February.
Jacob's remarks came before the UN Security Council during an emergency session convened by Denmark, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and France to discuss the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
