Romanian voters are casting their ballots to choose their president
[04/ May/2025]
Bucharest - (Saba):
Romanians are voting again on Sunday in the first round of the country's presidential election.

Opinion polls indicate that far-right, euroskeptic politician Gheorghe Simion could win, a test of rising nationalism in the EU.

Voting will begin at 7:00 a.m. (04:00 GMT) and end at 9:00 p.m. (18:00 GMT), with exit polls announced immediately.

A large number of Romanians abroad, where Simion is popular, also cast their ballots on Friday, with early turnout more than double that of the canceled first round last November.

Simion's poll rating is around 30 percent, a comfortable lead, but well below the 50 percent he needs to avoid a runoff on May 18.

Simion's main rivals in the election are former senator Kerin Antonescu, 65, who is supported by the three parties in the current pro-Western government, and Bucharest Mayor Nicosur Dan, 55, who is running as an independent on an anti-corruption platform.
