Moscow – Saba:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in a conversation with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on Saturday, called for settling disputes in India-Pakistan relations through political and diplomatic means.

A statement on the ministry's website read: "During the phone call, the two ministers discussed current issues in Russian-Indian relations, as well as the deterioration of relations between India and Pakistan following the terrorist attack near Pahalgam."

The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that Lavrov called for settling disputes between New Delhi and Islamabad through political and diplomatic means on a bilateral basis, in accordance with the provisions of the 1972 Shimla Agreement and the 1999 Lahore Declaration.

The statement concluded by saying: "The two ministers discussed the agenda for upcoming contacts at the presidential and high-level levels."

Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors escalated after a terrorist attack near the city of Pahalgam in India's Jammu and Kashmir region on April 22, when gunmen opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination.
