Gaza – SABA:
The General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions in the Gaza Strip affirmed that International Workers' Day, which falls tomorrow on May 1, comes amid an escalation in crimes committed by the occupying army against workers and the Palestinian people in Gaza, having destroyed more than 95% of workshops and factories in the region.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Federation said that the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip has completely destroyed sectors such as fishing, public transportation, construction, metal industries, woodworking, and tailoring. This has led to the loss of employment for hundreds of thousands of workers, pushing the unemployment rate among workers in Gaza to over 80%.
The Federation called for turning tomorrow’s observances into a global show of solidarity with the workers of Gaza and the Palestinian people. While workers around the world celebrate this day, Gaza’s labor force is living through a catastrophic reality under a bloody Zionist war that has obliterated all labor sectors, killed thousands of workers, destroyed their homes and workplaces, and displaced them.
The statement highlighted that the global grassroots support for Gaza reflects a commitment to defending human rights and standing up for humanity in the face of a machine of destruction that spares nothing.
It further noted that the Zionist aggression has entirely destroyed the Palestinian economy, bulldozed and bombed vast tracts of agricultural land—especially in border areas that serve as the food basket for the Strip—while also blocking the entry of food and fuel, cutting off electricity and water, leaving the territory in complete darkness for more than eight months.
The Federation concluded by stating that the crimes committed against Gaza’s workers demand a fair trial for war criminals to ensure justice for humanity. It praised all efforts and arrest warrants issued against the leaders of the occupying forces and called for their implementation to hold the perpetrators accountable.
