Half of them are minors... over billion people in world live in extreme poverty
[17/ October/2024]
New York - Saba :
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) warned on Thursday that more than one billion people in the world are living in "acute" poverty, half of them minors.

According to AFP, according to the program and the "Oxford Initiative on Poverty and Human Development" in their annual report, especially to a poverty rate, three times higher in countries experiencing wars, while the number of armed conflicts recorded in 2023 was the highest since World War II.

Since 2010, WFP and the Oxford Initiative, a research center, have been calculating the global multidimensional poverty index based on data from 112 countries, in which 6.3 billion people reside.

"The Poverty Index 2024 (covering the year 2023) gives a thought-provoking picture," said UNDP chief statistician Yanchun Zhang: 1.1 billion people are living in multidimensional poverty, including 455 million in conflict zones," said UNDP senior statistician Yanchun Jang.

"In war-torn countries, poverty rates are three times higher than in peaceful countries," Jang added.

In conflict countries, "the deprivation experienced by their people is three to five times more severe," the UN official said, because "the struggle of the poor to secure their basic needs is much more difficult."
