BELGRADE September 06. 2024 (Saba) – The Serbian authorities are trying to recover a ship from the Danube and Black Sea fleet of the Nazi Kriegsmarine Navy. This ship was sunk by the German army in 1944 in the Danube River to prevent it from being captured by the Soviet army at the time.
Local media on Friday quoted Serbian authorities as saying that this is only the first ship among many that will be recovered from the depths of the river. The authorities plan to remove 21 ships that have been at the bottom of the Danube, in the waterway through Serbia, for 80 years.
Once the recovery is complete, part of this sunken Nazi flotilla is expected to be displayed to the public. But in addition to their historical value, removing these remains would significantly improve safety and navigation on the Danube.
