Russian Emergencies Ministry: No damage or casualties from Kamchatka earthquake

MOSCOW August 18. 2024 (Saba) - The Russian Emergencies Ministry Kamchatka Regional Branch announced on Sunday that there were no damages or casualties after a strong earthquake struck the region.

"The operational groups of rescuers in Kamchatka are inspecting socially significant facilities. According to preliminary information, there are no damages or casualties," the Kamchatka Region Main Directorate was quoted as saying by Sputnik.

The academy explained that "the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6 kilometers, with a magnitude of 7 degrees, and its epicenter was located 108 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky."

It added that a second earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred shortly after the first earthquake, 116 kilometers from the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city .

The Kamchatka Krai governor , Vladimir Solodov, said that a heavy wave of light aftershocks followed the first quake, noting that the strong aftershock possibility is small.

For its part, the Russian Emergencies Ministry announced that there were no tsunami warnings after the earthquake that struck off the Kamchatka coast .
