Iranian President affirms right to respond to aggression; revolutionary guards promise retaliation for assassination of Haniyeh
[12/ August/2024]
TEHRAN August 12. 2024 (Saba) -Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted on Monday that responding to aggression is a right reserved solely for the state under attack, in accordance with international laws and regulations.

In a phone call with Vatican Prime Minister Pietro Parolin, reported by the Iranian News Agency "Mehr," Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran’s stance is to bolster international peace and security while avoiding conflict and bloodshed.

Pezeshkian condemned the recent violence in Gaza, describing the killing of women and children, as well as attacks on hospitals and schools housing the displaced, as war crimes.

Earlier on Monday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards reaffirmed their intention to respond to the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh by the "Zionist entity" at a suitable time.

Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naeini, deputy head of public relations for the Revolutionary Guards, condemned Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran as a violation of the United Nations Charter. He noted that despite international condemnation, particularly from Islamic countries, the assassination has failed to achieve its intended goals.

Naeini suggested that the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran was part of a broader strategy to target the resistance axis and undermine Iran's security. He claimed that the "Zionist entity," in a desperate bid to divert attention from its struggles in Gaza, resorted to assassinating resistance leaders.
