SAO PAULO August 10. 2024 (Saba) - A plane on a domestic flight in Brazil crashed in the state of Sao Paulo on Friday, with local authorities reporting "no survivors" of the 61 people on board during the tragedy, the causes of which are still unknown.

The plane was heading from Cascavel in the state of Parana (south) to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo and crashed in Vinhedo at 13:25 (16:25 GMT).

Voebas said in a statement that its plane was carrying "57 passengers and four crew members", after initially reporting that there were 62 people on board.

Images broadcast by local media showed the plane falling at high speed, and other images showed a long column of smoke rising from the crash site in a residential area.

The Valinhos municipality, which took part in the rescue operations in the nearby town of Vinhedo, said there were "no survivors".

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his sorrow for the tragedy during an official event in the south of the country, observing a minute's silence for the victims.

The plane was an ATR 72-500, and the Franco-Italian manufacturer, which is part of Airbus and Italy's Leonardo, said in a statement that "ATR specialists are fully committed to supporting the ongoing investigation.
