Sana'a Water Basin Committee discusses requests to drill new & postponed water wells

SANA'A August 10. 2024 (Saba) - The mini-committee of the Sana'a Water Basin discussed in its meeting on Saturday headed by the Deputy Minister of Water and Environment - Chairman of the Committee Hanin Al-Dreib, the requests submitted to the committee regarding the drilling new and postponed wells and the review of grievances in most of the wells within the basin.

The committee reviewed in its meeting, which included members, the Undersecretaries of the Capital Secretariat Abdul Fattah Al-Sharafi, Sana'a Governor Yahya Jumaan and Fares Al-Kahali, and the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Abdul Karim Mayad, 41 requests to drill new wells, eight requests to drill postponed wells, and 12 requests to review the grievances submitted to the Basin Committee.

In the meeting, Water and Environment Deputy Minister stressed the importance of adjudicating the requests submitted to the committee, while ensuring the protection of the Sana'a Basin and preventing the random and unjust depletion of the basin. He stressed the importance of coordination with the relevant authorities to prevent the random , illegal drilling of new wells in the basin areas, and to enhance control over any violations of random well drilling.

Al-Dreib pointed out that preserving groundwater requires implementing the laws and legislation in force to protect water basins from depletion and prevent random drilling.

The Water Resources Authority Director Branch in Sana'a, Eng. Mustafa Muhammad Al-Shahari, reviewed the technical details of the requests submitted to the Authority's branch to grant licenses to drill new wells, review , postpone them, and the specific locations of the submitted requests, their details, legality and technical notes.
