WASHINGTON August 02. 2024 (Saba) - The US President Joe Biden on Thursday said the assassination of Ismail Haniyah, head of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) political bureau, will impede a ceasefire in the aggression launched by the Zionist enemy on Gaza.
Biden said that he had what he described as a direct conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier on Thursday.
The US president expressed "grave concern" over the escalation of tensions in the Middle East and noted that he had urged Netanyahu to quickly reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
"I'm very concerned about the situation," Biden told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland at meeting with U.S. prisoners released from Russia, adding that Haniyah's assassination in Tehran "does not help" reduce tensions.
Hamas announced the assassination of its political bureau chief Ismail Haniyah at dawn on Wednesday in a "Zionist raid" on his residence in Tehran, which he was visiting to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.
