SANA'A July 29. 2024 (Saba) - Prime Minister of the Caretaker Government Dr. Abdulaziz bin Habtoor and Speaker of the Shura Council Mohammed Al-Aidaroos, on Monday participated in the World Population Day 2024 celebration organized by the National Population Council in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund.

The event was held under the slogan "Harnessing the Power of Comprehensive Data for a Better Future for All."

Dr. Bin Habtoor expressed gratitude to supporters of the National Population Council, emphasizing the significance of accurate population data amid ongoing crises and wars affecting Yemen.

He highlighted the impact of nearly a decade of aggression on Yemen's population and stressed the importance of data in guiding effective decision-making and strategic planning.

The Prime Minister also condemned recent statements by Israeli officials and criticized international support for such actions, equating them with historical colonial atrocities.

The event, attended by various government officials including the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Obaid bin Dabi', and the Minister of Guidance and Hajj and Umrah Affairs, Najib Al-Aji, underscored Yemen’s challenges in population data.

Minister of Planning and Development, Abdulaziz al-Kumaim, noted the urgent need for updated population data, as the last comprehensive census was conducted in 2004. He called for increased support to address population issues exacerbated by ongoing aggression and blockade.

Assistant Secretary-General of the National Population Council, Mutahhar Zabarah, emphasized the importance of celebrating World Population Day to highlight population issues and raise awareness.

Zabarah stressed that the occasion serves as a reminder of Yemen's commitment to overcoming challenges despite the ongoing aggression and siege, and moving forward in development and achieving national goals.

In turn, the UNFPA representative in Yemen, Enshirah Ahmed, highlighted that World Population Day aims to spotlight urgent population issues and remind people of the efforts required to address them.

She explained that since the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994, significant progress has been made both in Yemen and globally in improving the collection, analysis, and use of population data to address these issues.

The UNFPA representative noted that accurate data is crucial for setting goals, developing strategies, and creating comprehensive development plans and programs. She also emphasized the importance of the partnership with the National Population Council, the Central Statistical Organization, and the Civil Status Authority in enhancing, developing, and accurately reporting national population data.
