NIAMEY July 06. 2024 (Saba) -US Air Force Major General Kenneth Ekman announced on Friday that the US military is scheduled to complete the withdrawal of all its soldiers from Air Base 101 in Niamey, the capital of Niger, on Sunday, and then shift its focus to exiting a large drone base in the coming weeks.
Ekman, who is in Niger to coordinate the exit, stated that the withdrawal from Air Base 101 will end with a ceremony on Sunday evening.
Ekman indicated during his speech via video technology from the capital of Niger, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse, that a joint ceremony will be held on this occasion, which marks the departure of the last American C-17 (planes). The Niger government will take control of the former American areas and facilities.
It is noteworthy that last April, the authorities in Niger ordered the United States to withdraw its soldiers from the country, numbering about a thousand soldiers, in an embarrassing setback for Washington in the West African country.
While US forces are withdrawing, Russia is deploying forces to the same base where they are conducting training activities.
