NEW YORK June 15. 2024 (Saba) - UN Secretary-General António Guterres blacklisted Zionist military and security forces in his annual report on children and armed conflict for killing, maiming and other violations against children.
According to the Palestinian Ma'an News Agency today, the annual report covering last year said that violence against children in armed conflicts, in 2023, reached very high levels, with an increase of 21 percent in physical violations, as children bore the burden of increasing and escalating crises marred by complete disregard for children's rights, especially the right to life.
The killing and maiming of children increased by 35 per cent, while the number of children killed and maimed reached an unprecedented level, in devastating crises in Israel, the occupied Palestinian territory – especially the Gaza Strip – and other areas including Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and Myanmar.
These reports, mandated by members of the Security Council, are issued to the UN Secretaries-General to submit annual reports based on a well-established methodology on children and armed conflict, accompanied by a list of States that have committed violations against children in the context of conflict and non-State actors.
It will be recalled that, for the first time since the issuance of these annual reports, the Secretary-General has included Israeli military and security forces on the list annexed to the report for killing and maiming children and attacks on schools and hospitals.
The conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories has resulted in grave violations against children of unprecedented scale and intensity, with hostilities increasing those violations by 155 per cent. In his report, the Secretary-General urged Israel to sign a plan of action with the United Nations to end and prevent the killing and maiming of children and attacks on schools and hospitals.
