ILLINOIS June 10. 2024 (Saba) - Students from Northwestern University in the US state of Illinois have boycotted their graduation ceremony, in protest of the continuing genocide in the Gaza Strip, and the university administration’s refusal to respond to the protesters’ demands to stop investments and relations with the Zionist entity.
The students also held a special popular ceremony in front of the university’s annual graduation ceremony at the United Center in Chicago, in which they chanted the names of students who were martyred in Gaza Strip throughout the eight months of war.
The students carried banners reading “Do not go out in Gaza,” and pictures and information of some of the martyrs, as a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people and rejection of the warnings and pressures they are subjected to from their university administration.
On April 18, students and academics opposing the aggression on Gaza began a sit-in on the campus of Columbia University in New York, demanding that its administration stop its academic cooperation with Israeli universities and withdraw its investments in companies that support the occupation.
With the intervention of the police and the arrest of dozens of protesters, the state of anger expanded to extend to universities in countries such as France, Britain, Germany, Canada and India, all of which witnessed demonstrations and demands to stop the war on Gaza and boycott the companies that supply weapons to Israel.
