
BRUSSELS May 31. 2024 (Saba) - The European Union rejected attempts to classify UNRWA, a UN agency, as a "terrorist organization." Recalling the role it plays in the humanitarian response in Gaza.
The Union confirmed in a statement issued by its media office on Friday, that it "is deeply concerned about the discussions taking place in the Zionist Knesset regarding classifying UNRWA as a terrorist organization, and removing the immunities and privileges granted to its employees."
It also stressed that it "is concerned that the Israeli Land Authority ordered UNRWA to evacuate its buildings in East Jerusalem within the next thirty days."
The European Union condemned any attempts to classify a UN agency as a terrorist organization, recalling the crucial and irreplaceable role of UNRWA in the humanitarian response in Gaza, as the agency provides vital services to millions of people in Gaza and the West Bank, and throughout the region, including Lebanon and Jordan.
He said that the European Union is a strong supporter of the Agency and will remain, together with its Member States, its largest donor and is committed to continuing its support. He stressed that it is “a strong supporter of the United Nations and the rules-based, multilateral global governance system of which UNRWA, as a UN agency, is a part.”
