ROME May 21. 2024 (Saba) - Italian authorities announced on Tuesday that dozens of earthquakes of unprecedented degrees in 40 years were recorded in Campi Flegre near Naples in southern Italy, without causing major damage, but they terrified residents.
Local media quoted the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, in a statement, as saying: A tremor of magnitude 4.4 was recorded at 20.10 (16.10 pm GMT), Tuesday morning, at a depth of 2.5 kilometers.
Minutes earlier, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake was struck followed by dozens of aftershocks.
"As of 19:51 pm (17:51 GMT), a series of tremors occurred in the Campi Flegre area," a volcanic area, and "49 earthquakes were detected," the institute said in its statement.
Mauro de Vito of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology noted that this series of earthquakes "is the strongest in the last forty years."
Mayor Luigi Manzoni said on Facebook that schools would remain closed in Pozzuoli, where asylum centres have opened and tents have been set up in a parking lot and a seaside plaza to welcome people in the city.
