Canadian authorities evacuate thousands due to bushfires

OTTAWA May 13. 2024 (Saba) - Canadian authorities have evacuated thousands of people as the first major wildfire of the season broke out and continued to spread in western Canada.

On Monday, local media quoted authorities as saying that the fire was currently raging in nearly 2,500 hectares, and about 3,500 people had to be evacuated.

The mayor of Fort said moderate weather conditions had helped slow the progress of the fire, but the return of winds could make the situation worse.

"We are in a period of level five drought, which makes fighting wildfires very difficult, but we will do everything we can to contain these fires."

In 2023, Canada experienced the worst fire season in its history, with fires that swept from east to west affect more than 15 million hectares, killing eight firefighters and forcing authorities to evacuate 230,000 people.
