UNICEF warns of 'imminent new disaster' for 600,000 Palestinian children in Rafah
[06/ May/2024]
NEW YORK May 06. 2024 (Saba) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned on Monday that about 600,000 Palestinian children in Rafah are threatened with a "new imminent disaster" and called for not "evacuating them by force".

According to AFP, the organization said in a statement: "Due to the concentration of a large number of children in Rafah, some of whom are extremely vulnerable and barely resilient, and given the expected scale of violence with evacuation corridors littered with mines and unexploded ordnance, UNICEF is warning of a new imminent disaster for children."

The organization called for them not to be "forcibly evacuated" at a time when the Zionist enemy forces launched an evacuation operation in the city, which the enemy insists on launching a ground offensive.

The organization warned that "military operations could lead to a large number of civilian casualties and the complete destruction of basic services and infrastructure on which they depend for their survival."

"Rafah is now a city of children, and its children have nowhere safe to go within Gaza," said Catherine Russell, the organization's director. If large-scale military operations begin, children will not only be at risk of violence, but also of chaos and panic, as they are already physically and mentally exhausted."

UNICEF, which has once again called for a ceasefire, particularly emphasizes that 78,000 infants under the age of two and 175,000 children under five (nine out of ten children) are suffering from one or more infectious diseases.
