Russian scientists turn waste into cheap cement
[24/ April/2024]
MOSCOW April 24. 2024 (Saba) - Scientists at the Russian Federal University of Vernadsky in Crimea has said that they have developed the composition of raw cement on the basis of industrial and technological waste received from laboratories and factories.

On Wednesday, the Russian TASS news agency quoted the university’s press service as saying the university’s specialists recently conducted a study using X-rays, which allowed them to determine the chemical and mineral composition of secondary raw materials.

Scientists had previously developed the technology of manufacturing strong and durable building products from slag resulting from mining plants. Paving slabs and bricks were obtained in good quality.

It is noteworthy that industrial waste accumulated in one of the Crimean companies that is developing a quarry in the Simferopol region over a large area.. Based on the data obtained, the composition of raw cement mixtures was prepared and burned in a high-temperature oven.

The university’s press service quoted Alexander Bakhtin, deputy director of educational and methodological work at the Academy of Construction and Architecture, as saying: “After burning the developed mixtures, we obtained samples of clinker that looked like irregularly shaped sheets. The resulting clinker was ground in a special mill with the addition of natural gypsum.” In the end, we obtained a powdered material, i.e. cement, which we are accustomed to seeing in our daily lives.”

According to the specialist, from these raw materials, cement with strength class 32.5 was obtained, which is one of the most popular types of cement in the construction sector. The quality of what the scientists obtained corresponds to cement made from natural raw materials, but the cost of clay made from secondary raw materials is tens less many times the cost of natural clay.
