President of Ecuador declares state of emergency due to energy crisis
[20/ April/2024]
QUITO April 20. 2024 (Saba) - On Saturday, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency due to the energy crisis his country is experiencing.

The Ecuadorian President, who took office last November, acknowledged in a statement the critical state of the energy sector in Ecuador, as a few days ago he issued directives for power outages for periods throughout the day.

The state of emergency imposed in Ecuador aims to ensure the continuity of public electricity service after drought (partly caused by the climate phenomenon known as El NiƱo) affected production activities at hydroelectric dams.

Quito relies on hydroelectric power plants to meet its population's energy needs, but drought has led to lower water levels, including in reservoirs used to generate electricity.
