TOKYO April 18, 2024 (Saba) - At least nine people were injured as a result of an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, which struck several governorates in western Japan last night.

The Japanese Kyodo News Agency quoted officials from the Japanese Meteorological Agency as saying that the earthquake was at a depth of 39 kilometers, and resulted in at least nine people sustaining minor injuries, and they were taken to hospital.

Kyodo indicated that the earthquake's magnitude was in the lower range of 6 on the Japanese seismic scale, which ranges from 0 to 7, in parts of Ehime and Kochi Prefectures, and in the lower range of 5 in parts of Oita Prefecture.

Japan lies at the meeting point of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. It is also home to 100 active volcanoes.

An earthquake that occurred in 2011, measuring nine on the Richter scale, and accompanied by massive tsunami waves, killed more than 15,000 people, and also caused a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
