Senegalese elect their new president after three years of severe political crisis
[24/ March/2024]
DAKAR March 24. 2024 (Saba) - On Sunday, voters in Senegal go to the polls to cast their votes and choose the country's fifth president in postponed elections taking place amid a turbulent political atmosphere that sparked violent anti-government protests and strengthened support for the opposition.

According to what was reported by Agence France-Presse, 19 candidates are competing to succeed President Macky Sall, who is leaving office after a second term marred by violent unrest due to the trial of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and fears that he wants to extend his term beyond the constitutional limit.

For the first time in Senegal's history, a sitting president does not participate in the elections. His ruling coalition chose former Prime Minister Amadou Ba (62 years old) as its candidate.
