SC postpones voting on new draft resolution on Gaza
[24/ March/2024]
NEW YORK March 24. 2024 (Saba) - The UN Security Council has postponed voting on a draft resolution, prepared by non-permanent members, calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in the holy month of Ramadan, until Monday.

Diplomatic sources told Agence France-Presse that “a vote scheduled for Saturday in the UN Security Council on a new draft resolution has been postponed.”

The sources explained that “this postponement was decided to allow further discussions on this alternative draft resolution, which was prepared by a number of non-permanent members of the Council, namely Algeria, Malta, Mozambique, Guyana, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Switzerland and Ecuador.”

The alternative draft resolution calls for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire during the month of Ramadan that leads to a permanent ceasefire” and the removal of all obstacles to humanitarian aid.

This came after Russia and China dropped, on Friday, a US draft resolution because it “does not request an immediate ceasefire” and is dedicated to “supporting the ambitions of the United States in the region and giving the Zionist entity the green light to launch an attack in Rafah,” according to Beijing and Moscow.

In addition to Russia and China, Algeria opposed the American draft resolution, and Guyana abstained from voting, while the document was supported by Britain, Malta, Mozambique, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, the United States, Sierra Leone, France, Switzerland, Ecuador and Japan.
