Foreign Minister: Real legitimacy in Yemen lies with Supreme Political Council & Salvation Government
[21/ September/2023]

SANA'A September 21. 2023 (Saba) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Engineer Hisham Sharaf Abdullah, sent a message to the President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Denis Francis, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the heads of delegations participating in this session, on the occasion of the general debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The title of this year's session was "Rebuilding Confidence and Reviving the Flame of Global Solidarity: Accelerating the Pace of Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals in order to achieve peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all."

The Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that at a time when world leaders are meeting to discuss issues of sustainable development with the aim of achieving the well-being of human society, the Republic of Yemen is still being subjected to aggression and siege by the countries of the US-Saudi-Emirati aggression coalition for the ninth year in a row in flagrant violation of all international norms and conventions.

He explained that the aggression committed the most heinous crimes and violations against humanity, causing the deaths of thousands, the displacement of millions, and the emergence of the worst humanitarian disaster in the modern era.

Minister Sharaf stressed in his letter that the so-called Al-Alimi and his government do not represent the Yemeni people or their interests, and do not enjoy any legitimacy, but rather were appointed by the aggression countries as tools to implement their agenda of occupying and plundering Yemen’s wealth, destroying its capabilities, and threatening its sovereignty, unity, and independence.

He pointed out that the real legitimacy in Yemen belongs to the Supreme Political Council and the National Salvation Government, which has won the confidence of Parliament and whose protection, care, and services are enjoyed by more than 24 million Yemenis. Therefore, it was logical for it to be given room to participate in the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly, Security Council sessions, and the sessions of the Human Rights Council so that they can explain the injustice of the Yemeni people and make their voice heard in these important international platforms.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that Sana'a has the natural right to defend itself and the interests of its people, and to restore their legitimate rights to open Sana'a International Airport and the port of Hodeida, pay employees' salaries, leave the occupiers from Yemeni territory, and end the aggression and siege.

He considered the continued intransigence of the aggression countries, their lack of peace, and their provocations a threat to regional and international security and navigation in the Red Sea. He called on the arms producing and exporting countries to stop supplying their weapons to the aggression countries, which will contribute to putting pressure towards ending the aggression and the blockade.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also called on the international community to be open to the Yemeni people and their just and right demands, including resuming the activity of diplomatic missions of brotherly and friendly countries in the capital, Sanaa, in a way that serves common interests.

Minister Sharaf concluded his message by emphasizing that Sana’a was and is still keen to achieve just peace and has made many initiatives and concessions. Moreover, since the end of the truce on October 2, 2022, it has been exercising the utmost degree of self-restraint despite the continued aggression, siege and violations on a daily basis, which indicates Sana’a’s sincere desire to making peace.
