G77+China summit calls for unity in facing rich countries

HAVANA September 17. 2023 (Saba) - The Group of 77+ China has called at the conclusion of its summit held in the Cuban capital, Havana, for “unity” in confronting the rich countries.

In its final statement, the group's countries affirmed their "commitment to increasing unity" within the group in order to "strengthen its role on the international scene."

She stressed "the urgent need to completely reform the international financial architecture" so that it is "more comprehensive and more coordinated."

The group's countries said in the statement, "We note with great concern that the severe problems caused by the international economic system to developing countries due to its lack of justice have reached their peak."

She pointed in particular to the consequences of the epidemic, geopolitical tensions, inflation, the decline in biodiversity, and financial crises, “without a clear roadmap that allows addressing these global problems to date has emerged.”

The group, which Uganda will chair in 2024, also called for "increasing the representation of developing countries in global decision-making bodies."

The countries issued a second declaration “welcoming the request of the Mexican government to resume its activities” within the group, according to what Rodolfo Benitez, Director of Multilateral Affairs at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, announced during a press conference.

Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcenas expressed her country's desire to return to the ranks of the group after it left it in the 1990s.

The "Group of 77 + China" summit began on Friday in Havana with the participation of about 100 countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The group, which was established by 77 countries in 1946, currently includes 134 countries, and China participated in the meeting as an external party.
