South African: 23 countries have submitted official requests to join BRICS

CAPE TOWN Aug. 14. 2023 (Saba) - The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that 23 countries have submitted official requests to join the BRICS group, and that they will be discussed at the upcoming summit this month.

South African Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Naledi Pandor said in a press conference according to RIA Novosti “During the summit, the leaders of the BRICS countries will discuss the issue of expanding the organization, and South Africa, as chair of the BRICS group, will hold talks at the summit on the enlargement model, its principles and criteria.”

The minister published a list of countries that have submitted official requests to join the organization, namely Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cuba, Honduras, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Thailand, the Emirates and Ethiopia.

Pandor indicated that a special report will be presented at the summit on the principles of BRICS expansion and the list of countries wishing to join it, stressing that the leaders will take a final decision in this regard.

The BRICS summit will be held from August 22-24 in Johannesburg under the chairmanship of South Africa.
