TUNISIA June 23. 2023 (Saba) - Tunisia announced on Friday the death of three African migrants and the loss of at least 12 others after their boats sank off Tunisia.
According to Reuters, Fawzi Al-Masmoudi, judge at the Sfax Court said the coast guard rescued 152 others off the coast of the city of Sfax in southern Tunisia.
Waves of irregular migration from Tunisia have escalated over the past few years after its coasts were transformed into the most prominent transit areas for refugees from sub-Saharan African States towards European coasts.
The European Union had announced the allocation of Euro100 million (about $107 million) to Tunisia to contain the flow of migrants into Europe this month.
According to data from the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, only during the first quarter of the current year, 14 Alpha and 963 people were prevented from leaving Tunisia by sea.
