UNICEF: More than 13.6 million children in Sudan are in urgent need of humanitarian support
[30/ May/2023]
GENEVA May 30. 2023 (Saba) - UNICEF has revealed that more than 13.6 million children in Sudan are in urgent need of life-saving humanitarian support, the highest number ever recorded in the country.

The United Nations Children's Fund stated in a report carried by "Russia Today" channel that "the need for humanitarian aid is more important than ever for children in Sudan, as the most vulnerable population struggles to survive and protect themselves and it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure access to basic necessities.”

It pointed out that the number of children in need of humanitarian assistance before the conflict was about 9 million children.

"The situation, which was already dire for children before the conflict, is now at catastrophic levels, as access to food, drinking water, electricity and communications is irregular, unavailable or unaffordable," UNICEF warned.

"More than a million people have been forced to flee their homes to seek safety elsewhere, either within Sudan or across borders into neighboring countries, half of the displaced are believed to be children," it added.

UNICEF stressed that "without an immediate and large-scale humanitarian response, the consequences of displacement and the lack of basic social services and protection will have devastating and long-term effects on children."
