Water minister discusses UNOPS support for water, sanitation projects

SANA'A April 03. 2023 (Saba) - A meeting chaired by Minister of Water and Environment Abdulraqib al-Shurmani discussed on Monday the level of cooperation with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Yemen in supporting water and sanitation projects.

The meeting, which included Program Advisor at the UNOPS Khaldoun Saleh and Director of the Urban Cities Project Mohammed al-Muqdami discussed ways to finance water and sanitation projects, to cover the needs and provide services to citizens.

It dealt with the possibility of UNOPS support for the capacity building program and its desired goals in developing and qualifying the functional cadre in the Ministry of Water and its institutions and bodies to raise the level of performance and develop work.

The meeting also discussed solar energy projects and the possibility of supporting local water and wastewater institutions by the UNOPS in installing solar energy systems according to the needs and plans submitted.

Aspects related to the implementation of the treatment plants project for the city of Sa'ada were discussed, which will benefit 200,000 residents of the provincial capital and neighboring areas and serve efforts to preserve the environment and treat wastewater, in addition to treatment plants in the cities of al-Qaeda, Damt and Ma'abar in Ibb, Dhale' and Dhamar respectively.

The Minister of Water and Environment affirmed keenness to enhance coordination with UNOPS in a way that contributes to the implementation of water and sanitation projects in the Capital Sana'a and the provinces.

Al-Shurmani pointed out the need for the UUNOPS to continue supporting local institutions and focus on sustainable projects in order to ensure the continuity of providing services to citizens, especially in light of the continued aggression and siege.

Minister al-Shurmani pointed out the importance of benefiting from the available funds to ensure the efficient implementation of water and sanitation projects and to benefit from them, especially in rural areas that suffer from difficult conditions in this aspect.
