SEOUL March 19. 2023 (Saba) - The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces announced that North Korea has launched a ballistic missile towards the East Sea.

The South Korean news agency (Yonhap) quoted the authority as saying "It is conducting an analysis of the details of the launch process.

The launch comes three days after the launch of what the North Korea claimed was an intercontinental ballistic missile on March 16 hours before the Korean-Japanese summit meeting was held in Tokyo.

It seems that the new missile came in a clear protest against the ongoing joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, Freedom Shield, which began on March 13 and will continue until the 23rd of the same month.

For his part, Japanese Deputy Defense Minister Toshiro Inoue said in a press briefing that Japan protested through diplomatic channels with North Korea over the latest missile test which "constitutes a threat to the security of the region."

Inoue stressed that "North Korea's continuous missile tests pose a security threat to our country, the region and the entire international community, and are totally unacceptable. We have protested against North Korea through diplomatic channels through the embassy in Beijing."

The missile traveled a distance of 800 km, reached a maximum height of 50 km, and fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

North Korea fired two cruise missiles from a submarine on March 12 the day before the drills were to begin and a short-range ballistic missile on March 14.
