GENEVA February 07. 2023 (Saba) - Rescue workers are continuing to dig through the rubble of collapsed buildings, searching for survivors of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey and neighboring Syria, killing more than 4,980 people.

By Tuesday, Turkish authorities recorded 3,381 deaths and 20,426 injuries, according to state media. In Syria, 812 people were killed and 1,449 injured in government-controlled areas, according to state media. An additional 790 people were reported dead by civil defense forces in the rebel-held northwest.

People in northwest Syria were already in dire need of humanitarian aid, the United Nations says. Many of the nearly 3.5 million Syrian refugees in Turkey live in areas now devastated by the quake.

The death toll from the earthquake rose to nearly 5,000, with most in Turkey, where Turkish state media reported 3,381 people died and more than 20,000 were wounded.

Syria said 812 people died and 1,449 were wounded, while more than 790 people were killed and 2,200 injured in northwestern opposition-held areas, according to the Syrian Civil Defense.
