SANA'A, Apr. 20 (Saba) – Food sovereignty is one of the main challenges facing state and a priority associated with national security and is increasingly important as conflicts and wars worsen.
Increased agricultural crop production is one of the main components of access to food sufficiency and food security.
So, the Yemeni national decision makers sought to develop a strategy and plans aimed at achieving national sovereignty in various political, economic, social and cultural fields and away from external guardianship.
It was clear that the decision-maker in the agricultural sector in particular was well aware that the independence of the national decision would not be achieved through food security but, it needs to be the product of an integrated system that begins with a strategic vision of politicians and goes through the stages of preparation and therefore the application of that vision to reality.
In other words, sovereignty has become one of the main tasks of the modern state, which must bear the burden of providing the needs of citizens and addressing food imbalances resulting from internal and external factors.
In the food crises witnessed by the world and the region, we have the best evidence of the inability to deal with the so-called "diet" that emerged in the aftermath of World War II, where evidence of that system indicated further neglect of agriculture in Yemen and the Arab region.
What needs to be said is that the failure of the economic development plans adopted by previous governments in Yemen has not achieved the desired success, but had a negative impact on the reality of food security.
During that stages, Yemen witnessed a number of attempts to develop food and agricultural production. However, the figures reflected a decline in self-sufficiency rates in most food varieties, primarily cereals and legumes.
With regard to agriculture in particular, the failure has been associated with the sector for decades and has remained largely stalled, and the reason "according to many experts" is due to natural and technical barriers.
Despite the importance of the above as the problem , it is unacceptable to highlight these problems without addressing and talking about the biggest obstacle is a political absence.
In effort to liberalize Yemen political decision from foreign interventions, raising Yemen's food and self-sufficiency has become a must-reach goal, by relying on local natural resources.
It is noteworthy that the food problem is the multiplicity between domestic production and imported production, so the main bet is provide healthy and balanced food for whole population.
The so-called international food aid to alleviate the food crisis has been nothing but a dwelling of difficult reality, It's empty aid from the inside.
In conclusion, what needs to be said that the current handling seeking to promote the agricultural aspect are welcome and on right track, But it's still limited, and needs to make all efforts.
