313 Government, private hospitals will be suspended due to depletion of oil derivatives: Health Ministry
[22/ July/2020]

SANAA, July. 22 (Saba) - Thousands of patients live moments of the aggression coalition oil derivatives ships and preventing their entry into the port of Hodeidah.

In light of the intransigence of aggression and its deliberate denial of access to oil derivatives, the health sector faces difficult and catastrophic conditions that adversely affect the health services of patients and put their lives at risk of death.

For more than two months, the Coalition of Aggression prevented oil derivatives ships from reaching Yemen in apparent intransigence in order to compound the 64-month-old suffering of Yemenis as a result of its aggression and blockade, which the United Nations described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The aggression coalition deliberately exercises the harshest criminal sanctions against more than 25 million people living under this blockade, causing the depletion of oil derivatives from the stores of the Yemeni Oil Company, which will have a major impact on the health sector and foreshadow a humanitarian catastrophe more severe than the current crisis, in full view and the blessing of the United Nations and a negative silence from the international community despite repeated appeals by the rescue government in all its affected sectors, notably the health sector.

Ministry of Public Health and Population spokesman Dr. Yousef Al-Hadhery confirmed to Saba that the health situation will witness a major tragedy if the situation continues as it is for a few days to come and the United Nations and the international community do not act to carry out its humanitarian responsibilities.

He explained that it is expected that in the first hours of the end of the available derivatives, the work of about 150 hospitals and government agencies and 163 private hospitals will be stopped partly or complete, and may be converted into first aid centers, in addition to the closure of about 5,000 government and private centers and clinics in all departments and villages, which are losing more than 25 million citizens health care services.

Dr. Al-Hadhery pointed out that the epidemiological situation will be more serious than it is now because surveillance, control, referral and treatment depend heavily on oil derivatives and their interruption means a further and rapid deterioration of the epidemiological situation, as well as the closure of oxygen filling stations and its effects in the cessation of all care departments of hospitals in the Republic, which threatens the lives of all those in it or need it, mainly those infected with the coronavirus (Coved19).

He noted that the depletion of oil derivatives would lead to the closure of the departments of large and small operations of various kinds, and the 275 nursery departments in government hospitals and many in private hospitals, threatening the lives of newborns that needed them.

"The transfer of patients by ambulance will also be affected, which means that they will be pre-sentenced to die at home or where they are injured and sick, and the storage of medicines and solutions will be affected, which means that there is no medicine and solutions that need to be stored in refrigerators and this will of course result in complications of illness or death of every patient using these drugs," a health spokesman said.

He pointed out that the penetration of petroleum derivatives will lead to the suspension of diagnostic laboratories and government and private scouts, which means that the process of proper and accurate diagnosis of the disease by doctors is affected, which in turn will have a very significant impact on the prescribing of treatment and appropriate medicine and cause serious complications and often death. In addition to the closure of blood transfusion centers and research and the lack of safe blood and blood and its derivatives on thalassemia patients, wounded, burns, liver diseases, operations and others.

Al-Hadhery said that in the first hours of the end of the oil derivatives currently available in government hospitals, 1,000 patients in intensive care rooms, nurseries, or those who will need caesarean sections and emergencies will die, and the figure will double day by day.

He said the more than 3,500 dialysis patients who undergo twice-weekly laundry sessions at 13 government centers will be sentenced to death within a week, as well as other chronic diseases such as cancerous tumors, clots, bleeding, etc.

The Ministry of Health spokesman spoke of the burden a citizen will bear in moving from his village or his department to city hospitals, especially from the sprawling mountainous and rural areas.

The statement pointed out that the average monthly consumption of the health sector in both government and private sectors 2 million and 594 thousand and 230 liters equivalent to 26 thousand tons, while the quantity currently available is sufficient only for a few days.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Public Health and Population reiterated the call for the United Nations, its Secretary-General and its envoy to Yemen, its humanitarian organizations and the international community to take serious and genuine action to lift the blockade on Yemen and allow oil derivatives ships to enter the port of Hodeidah.
