Agriculture Minister: We seek wheat Self-sufficiency

SANAA, July 15 (Saba) - The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Abdulmalik al-Thawr has revealed practical directions to reach self-sufficiency in wheat harvests.

 

The Minister affirmed to Saba that the ministry has begun preparing a national vision for agricultural self-sufficiency and is currently preparing the first five-year plan to achieve the goal and general orientation of the Salvation government with regard to the wheat self-sufficiency, and obtain the food security.

 

"We have been able to achieve self-sufficiency in potato and maize production and are currently working to reach the great challenge of self-sufficiency in wheat," he said.

 

He indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is utilizing its capabilities and programs to develop the agricultural sector based on the main directives contained in the speeches of the leader of the revolution Sayyed Abdul Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, aiming to pay attention to the agricultural aspect, especially crops that contribute to food security and foremost grains.

 

"Based on these directives, the advancement of the agricultural sector requires the investment of all possible and effective means, taking attention to farmers and improvement of extension services for them, as well as the intensification of agricultural activities and programs in pest control, using modern irrigation techniques, the development of good crop varieties and other interventions that can contribute to improving the agriculture sector," the Minister added.

 

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation pointed out that Jawf province produces the best kinds of grains, especially wheat, and that the water resources in the province qualify it to become a promising area in providing food needs for Yemen.
