Many quarantined people in Afar live in tragic situation: Official
[23/ March/2020]

BAYDA, March 23 (Saba) - Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Management and Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation Abdelmohsen Tawoos on Sunday said there are a large number of deportees from several countries in Afar crossing in Bayda province, who are living in a tragic situation.

Tawoos explained that there is a committee formed from the Supreme Council for Humanitarian Affairs, the Health Ministry and the local authority in the province has allocated places in the quarantine for the arrivals to subject them to checks and necessary procedures as a precaution.

He pointed out that the quarantine at the Afar crossing lacks medical and housing services, and there is no intervention from any organizations so far, except for 3000 blankets, 2000 mattresses and 200 tents provided by the Sustainable Development Foundation on Saturday.

The quarantine centers need tanks, toilets, mobile bathrooms, and filters for drinking water, Tawoos added, calling on UNICEF and UN organizations to carry out their duties in this regard.

He called on the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Lise Grande, to provide all the needs agreed upon on March 9.

Tawoos held the United Nations Coordinator and the organizations fully responsible for any shortcomings in providing the necessary services to those exist at the crossings.
